About This Project

"Portrait of A Community" is a year-long photography project by Laura Buckbee Lewis in which she is aspiring to photograph as many New Milford residents as possible. The project will culminate in a large scale photographic exhibition and a published book at years end in conjunction with the town's 2007 Tricentennial.

Ms. Lewis hopes to create a true historic cross-section of the New Milford community and is encouraging all residents to be a part of history in the making. Ms. Lewis is working with local organizations, veterans, churches, and town commissions to reach various peoples of the community.  All New Milford residents are invited.

Organizations interested in scheduling portrait sessions
should contact Ms. Lewis at 860.355.2931.

A special thank you goes out to all of the Girl Scouts who participated in our history in the making by being photographed during their summer camp at Clatter Valley. There are over a hundred beautiful smiling faces that will soon be added to this gallery. Added thanks and many kudos to all of the PA's, leaders, and parents for assisting in the process. Your efforts in distributing forms, organizing groups, and provoking was commendable.
We could not have done it without you. Thank you.

For those of you that were photographed during camp and have not yet turned
in your release form,  please send it in so that you can be included in our book.

Ron Okpych
Ron Okpych

story by Laura Buckbee Lewis

Last July, during New Milford's Village Fair Days, I had the opportunity to meet and photograph a young father of three named Ron Okpych. He sat before me with a great deal of pride for his children as he spoke of each of them and their accomplishments in school and other activities.

He spoke of himself only to say "I am the luckiest Dad in the world".

I consider myself lucky to have met him, honored to have had the opportunity to photograph such a genuine individual, and saddened to learn that he passed away at the young age of 37.

Our hearts go out to Ron's children, family, and friends.  He will be missed by many.

We are creating a town-wide public exhibition
of the Portrait of A Community project at year's end.
